Day hike on the Shira Plateau offers a stunning one-day experience on the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from Londorossi Gate (around 2,360 m), you’re driven to the Morum Barrier (~3,400 m) where the trek begins. Over 3–4 hours, you ascend roughly 300 m across open moorlands, volcanic terrain, and sweeping alpine plains, reaching the Shira Plateau near 3,700–3,800 m. Optional extension to Cathedral Point adds another scenic detour at ~3,870 m elevation.

The return descent takes 2–3 hours, culminating in a full-day outing of about 5–7 hours and 8–12 km round-trip depending on route and stopping pointsAlong the way, hikers enjoy views of Kibo Peak, the ancient Shira caldera, and possibly wildlife like buffalo and colobus monkeys.
